Answer:
ESET NOD32 is very good and is considered one of the best – it’s fast, light and effective! Av-comparatives.org named it “AV of the Year” 2006 and 2007; and it came a close second in 2008. Reportedly it has also scored the most VB100 awards. I have no hesitations recommending it to anyone. Kaspersky Anti-Virus and Avira AntiVir *Premium* (the ‘paid-for’ version) are both very good also. While Avira do offer a free version of their software (AntiVir Personal), it is incomplete (i.e it lacks some features a good AV should include, such as a ‘WebGuard’). Definitely aim for a leading commercial AV as opposed to any of the freebies; they are all incomplete one way or another. EDIT: As I have just said, all of the freebies are incomplete. If you *had* to go for a freebie, Avast! Home Edition or Avira AntiVir Personal would be your best bet. Avast offers pretty much everything a commercial AV does, but Avira is known for it’s high detection-rates. It is highly advised to only install one (having two running in real-time will cause conflicts and a decrease in system performance). Tough choice? Avast – http://www.avast.com/ Avira – http://www.free-av.com/ As for AVG Free, well, you could say it is rather AVeraGe. Furthermore, according to the *official* AVG website, AVG Free includes no anti-rootkit – not a good feature to be lacking at all. It’s a popular choice, but popular ain’t always the best.
