Hardware Maintenance – Hard Work But Good Work

How many computer system issues would you imagine would be caused by hardware maintenance issues? Surprisingly it is almost a 50/50 split with software faults. After spending several years in the industry myself, I can tell you that I have spent many hours routing around inside a computer looking for the correct piece of hardware to remove.

Working in hardware maintenance can be an extremely stressful job, I mean think about it, every component that you handle has been precision made to do a specific job, its generally not cheap and it can also be short circuited by static from your body.

As mentioned above breaking components is one of the most worrying parts of the job, so when performing hardware maintenance it is vital that you wear an anti static wrist strap and attach it to a suitable earthing point. If you can’t find one you can normally attach the other end of the cable to the internal casing of the computer or server as this should be earthed.

Some more advanced earthing strips come with special adapters which you can either plug into a mains socket or securely fasten to an earthing point of your choosing.

It is amazing how many issues can be solved by changing a piece of hardware. One of the most common issues that I have come across as my time as a hardware maintenance engineer was network connectivity problems. This is usually the result of a burnt out card as the result of an electrical storm. I have literally seen engineers spend hours looking for a solution to the network problem when it could be solved a lot quicker and easier simply by replacing the network card.

It can be a good job to get into as you get to travel to a lot of different sites and experience new surroundings but on the whole one of the worst aspects of becoming a hardware maintenance engineer is the low level of pay that you receive for performing the job. There is certainly a skill to the job and it is not just a case of plug and play as some clients would have you believe. Obviously we have to order the parts as well and making sure that you order the correct parts is just as important as fitting them.

Would I recommend a job to someone in hardware maintenance? Yes I would, but I would also suggest they get a background in software maintenance as well for a fully rounded education of information technology support.

I didn’t install an antivirus on my comp. and now it’s infected. I’ve tried so many a-virus but they dont work?

All the anti-viruses ive tried have been installed, but when they get to the update section (which you need an internet connection, which i have, the virus blocks it. So the update scan, the virus eliminator, and all forms of virus removal don’t work. And it’s the same thing with all anti-virus programs. So now the virus is in control, it takes ages just to get on the internet, it blocks all my games, and nothing works properly. Help???

Answer:
Its likely you are being blocked by a trojan called TDSSserv.sys follow the instructions below and you will be able to download Malwarebytes and SuperantiSpyware which will remove your virus. start > run > type: devmgmt.msc > enter > view > show hidden devices > non-plug and play drivers > TDSSserv.sys > right click > disable > restart computer. Download, install, update and scan your computer with both Malwarebytes and SuperantiSpyware, delete anything they find, if this fails to completely remove the virus/spyware download then update Avast and run a boot scan (click schedule boot-time scan and restart your PC), all the software below is free and safe to use. Malwarebytes: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php SuperantiSpyware: http://www.superantispyware.com/ Avast Anti-Virus: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html To protect your PC in the future you’ll need to install anti-virus software and a firewall, id recommend using Avast and Comodo Pro firewall both are very effective and completely free, you should also switch to Firefox 3 if you are browsing with IE as its much safer and a lot easier to use.
