Why Does Trucking Software Cost So Much?
In our business, we hear this question a lot. And the answer is easy: business complexity and market size. Perhaps the same question about business software for other industries has the same answer, but I will attempt to shed some light for the trucking business looking to purchase new software as to why the cost of trucking software seems high.
On the surface the trucking business sounds simple. Most people not in freight transportation might think to themselves “Trucking is easy. All you have to do is take something from one location to another. I do that every day in my car as I go to work, go to the store, take the kids where they need to go, etc.” And if all you had to do in the trucking business is move the freight, they would be correct. However, that is not the case.
Those of us in freight transportation know how many details must also be managed just to move that freight from A to B. Beginning with time scheduling to make sure there is enough time for your driving staff to accommodate the move. Then there are the Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations governing the legal parameters within which the truck driver and trucking business must operate. Then there are the high up-front costs to operate such as fuel, insurance, and maintenance, all totaling to approximately $60K/yr per truck. These details explain the complexity side of the answer.
A trucking company with 10 trucks and drivers has at least 5 times the details and twice the cash flow to manage as most other small business with the same staff size. The software designed to manage all of this must consider these trucking specific details, and manage the cash items with much more visibility and efficiency than standard business software. This level of software design doesn’t come cheap. Just ask those who have done it well, or better yet ask those who have purchased the cheaper trucking software products to hear how poorly those systems performed.
Now lets discuss the market side of the answer. While the trucking industry is a very large segment of our national economy, there are actually very few companies operating within it. According to the most recent US Census, approximately 100,000 truckload trucking companies exist in the US and another 25,000 in Canada. That’s a total market of about 125,000 potential customers. Of that total market, over half of the companies are really quite small, with fewer than 5 trucks. These would be your start-ups and ultra-small fleets either in growth mode or phasing out of the business, and usually do not have the cash or personnel to purchase specialized software. At the other end of the spectrum, there are the large fleets of 500 trucks plus, making up the top ten percent of the list. These multi-million dollar corporations have internal IT staff and spend tens to hundreds of thousands each year on technology. That leaves about 35% of the market, or less than 45,000 companies as a “mid-level” target, most of which are not convinced that software can help their trucking businesses. The best case scenario a software provider can hope for is that 0.5% or 250 companies in the mid-level group will actually purchase software in a given year. That number must be shared among all the companies with trucking software products competing for that business. These companies must sell their products to recoup the development costs, marketing costs, and still have something left over for profits from a very small buying market.
To make a comparison, QuickBooks, the #1 small business accounting package, sells roughly 2 million copies of their software each year. That’s nearly 1000 times the market size of the trucking software market. If that many companies purchased trucking software annually, then it too would only cost $200 per copy. Taking that example one step further, trucking software should cost 1000 times what QuickBooks cost, or $200,000 per copy. With that math, you can see that most trucking software on the market is currently offered much cheaper than QuickBooks. All it would take is for the companies buying trucking software to double to 500/yr and the price of software would drop.
To summarize, software customized for a single industry must accomplish two goals: manage the details in that industry, and be sold at profitable price point. Good trucking software that properly manages the details of the trucking industry, just can’t be offered for cheap. Always remember two things. Not only do you get what you pay for, but when you buy quality, you only cry once.

25 Tips for Buying the Right Doctor’s Office Software
While there may be a few medical practices out there that defiantly cling to their old-school ways and keep a paper appointment book and a schedule pegboard on the wall, the vast majority of doctor’s offices now use some sort of practice management software to run their office. Since practice management software has been around for a long time and many offices are still using software that’s 10 years or more old, many are unhappy with the features and performance of their systems. For those of you who are on the market to change or upgrade your practice management software, here are 25 tips for making the right choice.
1. Make sure the vendor is reputable. How long have they been in business? How many clients do they have? Stay away from start-ups, no matter how enticing their sales pitch is.
2. Make sure the vendor supplies at no cost updates or fixes to the program that remedies glitches or unreasonable shortcomings in the software.
3. Before buying, ask to visit some of their clients currently using the software. When possible, find one that is in your same specialty.
4. Don’t skimp on the installation and implementation phase. Make your vendor pays close attention to setting up your new system. You should ask for and receive a detailed, written implementation plan before they begin.
5. Don’t skimp on employee training. That fancy new software is useless if no one knows how to use it.
6. Since most offices see a significant amount of employee turnover, find out what kind of follow-up training the company offers. What is the cost of additional training?
7. Make sure the vendor is committed to updating and improving the product on a regular basis.
8. Find out how often the vendor updates the software. Stay away from companies that do not have updates and patches at least every 6 months, as this may indicate a product that is not adequately supported.
9. Look for software that can be automatically updated via the Internet.
10. Your new practice management software must have robust reporting capabilities. Stay away from systems that offer only a few canned reports and little flexibility in creating custom reports.
11. Good practice management software will be fully HIPAA compliant. The system should offer multiple levels of security and access privileges. For example, you won’t want the front reception to have access to financial data.
12. Your new system should be able to track and log everything that every user does on the system. Fully logging all activity in audit trails will protect the practice in the event of an audit or allegations of employee wrongdoing.
13. Make sure the software transmits claims electronically.
14. Make sure the software connects to a good claims clearinghouse. Does the clearinghouse work with all the payers that you do business with?
15. Make sure the vendor has a good track record of partnering and interfacing with the top electronic medical records companies (EMR). An established vendor with good software will have interfaced with at least 30 or 40 of the top EMR companies.
16. Look for software that has built in or integrated automated appointment reminder calling. Stay away from systems that require you to purchase additional hardware and phone lines. The best solutions on the market use the Internet to transfer to-call lists to an offsite automated call center.
17. Make sure your new software has built in claim scrubbing and coding analysis. A good claim scrubber can bring in thousands of extra dollars each month by sending out cleaner claims.
18. Find a vendor whose system supports and electronic super bill or charge sheet. Going paperless with the super bill will greatly streamline the workflow and reduce data entry errors on the billing side.
19. Look for software that is browser-based at the workstation level. Whether self-hosted or ASP, having staff use the product via web browser will simplify the IT requirements of the office.
20. Find a system that incorporates an automated collections module to make the generation of collection letters and the collection process much less labor intensive.
21. Make sure the software has built-in, automatic eligibility verification. According to MGMA statistics, 10.7% of all claims are rejected due to eligibility issues. A good verification system can bring this rejection rate to near zero.
22. If your practice has multiple locations, make sure that the scheduling module is specially designed to easily look at multiple providers at multiple locations.
23. Find a system that allows you to assign and manage office tasks. The best systems will allow you to assign tasks to individual employees and include an automated escalation procedure if the task is not completed.
24. The best systems will offer an insurance card and driver’s license scanning add-on that scans, reads and loads the information from the cards into the appropriate fields in the system. This feature is a tremendous time saver and reduces data entry errors that get a claim rejected.
25. Does the vendor offer a secure web portal for patients? The best systems will allow patients to log onto a secure website, check account balances, pay bills, set appointments and communicate with providers.

How to Save Bundles For Peachtree Software When You Buy Online
Setting up accounting software for your business can be a mind-boggling task. First you must determine which software program will work for your company and then where and how to buy it. Will you need Peachtree by Sage Software or QuickBooks? What about MAS90 software? How much will it cost? The good news is you can save tremendously on your software by taking advantage of special offers online. Here are a few ways to save.
Research Software Types
One way to save dollars is to research various types of software and their features using the Web. Now you can read about features, benefits, compatibility and pricing from your home or office. There are even free demos to help you become familiar with each type of software. This will save time and money if you live in an area where there are very few retailers offering accounting software.
Researching online enables you to determine not only which brand of software, but also which version to buy. Should you buy Peachtree Quantum or Peachtree Accounting Pro? What about an industry-specific version such as Peachtree Manufacturing or Distribution? Should you buy a basic QuickBooks software or QuickBooks Enterprise? Another savings benefit of buying online is the fact that a few distributors of accounting software offer deep discounts through online coupons. Bundle Services and Training
You may need other services when you purchase Peachtree or other types of software. Perhaps you would like to take advantage of Peachtree training or training for other software. Some companies offer a value package for training online or in the classroom. You might save even more by purchasing your new software and training from the same online company. Training can help you learn to set up your software as well as how to best use it for your company’s functions. Whether you have an old practice or are just starting up a new one, it is important to keep it looking fresh and up to date with dental software that uses the most recent technology which includes web-based software. This kind of software will benefit you in so many ways that traditional software cannot because it is easy to use, little work to keep updated, and good at keeping your records safe. It will keep your practice looking fresh, clean, and up to date.

Web-based software is not any more difficult than using the internet, checking e-mail, or checking your bank accounts online. So not only is it easy, but it doesn’t have to take away from precious work time to do intensive training and to transition everything from one program to the web-based program. Since it’s the web, the software is intuitive. You can do your training online since the software is online and your staff will be trained and working like new in no time!
Another great aspect to web-based software is that it changes and molds to whatever changes your office faces. Need to update your dental software? You can do that right online; just take a few minutes to upload the new updates and your office will be back to normal in no time. You don’t have to worry about transferring everything to the new software or taking time, whether it is a day or a few days, to relearn or switch over to an updated version of the software. It grows with you; when your practice expands so does the capacity of the software. But as you get older, your software gets newer and more technologically advanced! And with multiple offices or practice locations, everything can be tracked in one place, keeping all your offices in the know, up to date, and in your hands regardless of the distance. You will never have to find another dental software to keep up with technology or the times because the web-based software does it all for you. You will be amazed!
If you have feared losing your records or files because your software crashes, you don’t need to worry anymore. Web-based dental software keeps track of everything input into the system using a server that won’t crash on you and keeps a backup record of everything you input. With this great feature, you don’t need to worry about storing years of old files and patient records because the server keeps track of it all and you can access it online for years! All you have to do it look it up! In addition, you don’t have to send for techs or maintenance to come fix your problems if your dental software goes down. Your web connection can take care of it for you, keeping you at ease, and allowing you to take care of any software problem right from the comfort of your own computer chair.
Web-based software is the cutting edge. If you want the cutting edge for your office to have that crisp, clean, and fresh appearance, then web-based dental software is definitely right for you. Software Testing Job – A Cake Job
A software testing job is what is known as a cake job. Basically it consists of sitting at a computer and testing software. Typically this is usually part of another job, but sometimes it is the only task that is assigned.
Why is it Necessary?
New software is written all the time. The software is always tested by the author but it is difficult to really get a feel for the software and to see if there are any bugs until it is used in actual applications.
A lot of software will work perfectly fine in a controlled environment but once it is put into play in a real time environment than the bugs pop up. It is important that the programmer knows what the bugs are and fixes them before the product hit’s the open market.
Functionality is also important to determine before the software is offered to consumers. If a product does not function the way it should function in real time than basically the product is useless and needs to be adjusted to function properly.
How Does it Work?
Usually a software testing job requires that the person doing the job uses the software in a real life setting for a specified period of time. The software may be monitored from a remote location by the programmer.
The tester has to take notes about the functionality of the software and utilize every aspect of the software in a number of environments. The tester may be required to use the software with other programs running to check for compatibility. The tester will generate a report which may in include things like how many times the software stopped working, or if any error messages were received.
Compensation
Compensation usually is not monetary, sometimes it is but usually it is not. Compensation is usually provided in the way of free copies of the software, or some other perks that are related to the software.
Gamers clamor to get on board to try out the latest gaming software, so they can get an early free copy of the software.
In some instances there may be gift certificates or other incentives that are given to try out and test software.
Software testing jobs can be fun, especially when trying out games or other fun applications. Sometimes these jobs are part of another job and are just tacked on as additional duties.
Software Testing Jobs are cake jobs. Software testing jobs are an awesome employment opportunity.

Campus Recreation Software – 5 Features to Look For When Choosing a Provider
When it comes to finding the right campus recreation software solution, the selection process can seem a bit daunting. To aid in this decision-making process, below are five key features to look for when your recreation department is ready to find the right software package to increase efficiency and overall student experience.
-
Integration with Best-of-Breed Systems on Campus. Make use of existing software investments by choosing campus recreation software that integrates with best-of-breed systems already on campus, such as your card system, intramural software, or accounting software. Don’t sacrifice your accounting software investment, for example, by selecting a new software solution that lacks compatibility. Select a solution that is compatible and allows you to have one integrated system that effectively manages all programs, revenues and facilities. Integrating with best-of-breed systems alleviates duplicate entries and records.
-
Customizable Reports. A campus recreation software system will capture a lot of information about who is using your facility, when, where and how. Make sure that this information can be exported into a report that will help your department make informed decisions and achieve its goals. Every campus is unique in their reporting needs, and that’s why it is essential that the software package you select offers customizable reporting and data output options to meet the needs of each of your constituents.
Without customized reporting options built into the software solution, the responsibility of pulling specific data relies on savvy IT departments, assuming they have specific training or Crystal licensing, for example, and this translates to a time-consuming process for IT personnel. Look for a software solution that provides you with powerful, flexible and in-depth reporting tools with multiple filters, flexible formatting, unlimited customization, mail merge, multiple export formats, and more. You’ll be able to make faster, more informed decisions and view only the information you want, when you want it.
-
Hosted Internet Registration and Payment Processing Options. You’ve invested a great deal to provide quality facilities and programs to your students. Further increase student satisfaction by providing a convenient online registration process. To facilitate this initiative, consider a software provider that offers Hosted Internet Registration and Payment Processing, also known as a Software-as-a-Service model. This means that the software provider hosts and manages your data off-premise so that you don’t have to invest the time and money required if doing it yourself. Self-hosting online registration means having to invest in additional payment servers, back up servers, and setting up security and firewalls. Selecting a campus recreation software provider who offers hosted technology means low upfront costs and faster implementation.
-
Integrated Payment Processing. Having a campus recreation software solution that integrates with your payment processing system means that reduced errors and paperwork. As a busy campus recreation center, it’s important to have one integrated system to avoid double-entry and reconciliation, balancing between multiple systems, ensure tighter security, and pull accurate reports.
Also, with online registration and integrated payment processing, it’s important that your campus recreation software solution ensures your compliance with PCI (Payment Card Industry) and Payment Application Best Practice (PABP) standards.
- Ease of Use. Software usability is extremely important, particularly at campuses where the skills of computer users vary greatly. Consider multilingual and American Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant software to meet the existing needs of your many students. Whether it’s “customer-facing” documents to print receipts, contracts, reports and registration confirmations in a variety of languages or enabling visually-impaired or ESL users to use your software system, look for a software package that offers true ease-of-use through its accessibility options for everyone.
While choosing a new campus recreation software solution does require much planning and process, the results will be well worth the effort when you can streamline your operations, improve efficiencies, and drive more participation from students and faculty.

Benefits of Buying Software Online
Online software can save you a great deal of time and provide you with a lot more choices than you might find locally but it can also be a little tricky to navigate especially if you are new to buying software online. Whether you are buying new software or upgrading an existing program here are some tips to help make it all less complicated.
Read Reviews
The toughest part about buying software is that you don’t get to try before you buy. If you are buying software you’ve used before great you know what to expect, but if you are simply choosing and hoping you’re making the right choice, then customer reviews can tell you a lot about a piece of software. In fact they can help make that decision a whole lot easier.
Compatibility
Make sure the software you are purchasing is compatible with your operating system, as well as the right amount of memory and disk space. For software to function correctly you must have at least the minimum requirements.
Read The Description
You can become a little more familiar with a piece of software by reading the description on the box. It should also tell you the capabilities of the software. Make sure it’s what you want because software is non-refundable.
Reputation Means Everything
Buy all software from a reputable company so that you can be sure you are getting an original and not a pirated version. You also want to make sure shipping is timely and that there is customer service. You can always check with the Better Business Bureau if you aren’t sure.
Price Check
The biggest perk to shopping online is the competitive pricing so make sure you do plenty of price checking to make sure you get the best price around.
Pay By Credit Card
Paying by credit card is a smart option because you will get some protection from the credit card company should the software not be delivered or as described.
Learn The Return Policy
You should know the return or refund policy before you buy any software. Software is usually non-returnable unless it is damaged in which case it’s usually an exchange. However, you still need to know how many days the policy is good for.
A new method of buying software online includes paying and downloading. The ability to immediately download has certainly been advantageous. Now you can decide you need a piece of software and in no time you can buy, download, and begin to use. If you are new to downloading on the web, relax because it can be a lot of fun.
Many software packs comes with a trial period which is fantastic! You can try it for however many days the trial is for and then if it’s what you want you can buy it. They’ll send you a key code, which you enter into the trial version, and suddenly you have the full software package. If you don’t like it, simply uninstall it and forget about it.
Buying software online is quick, easy, and so much more affordable than you might think.
