Computer Hardware and Software Essentials – Top 10 Home Computer Extras

If you are about to buy your first computer, or if you are thinking about what to add to your current system, what extras should you buy? There are a few basics that will make it much easier for you and your family to use the computer and also to get the most out of the Internet. Luckily, most of these extras are either free or won’t cost you too much money.

1. Printer: You need this to make copies of documents from your computer files or from the Internet. Printers start at around $30.

2. Mouse: If you bought a desktop computer, it should come with a mouse. If you bought a laptop, it comes with a built-in mouse, but an external mouse makes it much easier to use most programs and web sites. You can get one starting around $10.

3. Writable CD-ROM or DVD drive: Having this capacity makes it easy to back up data, transfer files between computers, or to create music CDs: While you can buy a drive that is separate from the computer, it is much more convenient to have one built into your machine. Make sure when you order your computer that it comes with at least one drive that can read and write CD-ROMs.

4. Speakers: Most laptops and even some desktops have built-in speakers, but a pair of external speakers will give you a better sound. If your new desktop or laptop does not come with a pair, you can get a cheap pair for less than $20.

5. Flash drives: You can use these either to back up your files or to transfer files between computers. While you can also use CD-ROMs and DVDs to store data, not every computer will have an appropriate drive, but you can use a flash drive with even the most basic new computer. They can start at less than $10. You should get at least one for every member of your family who will use the computer for work or for school.

6. Firefox browser: This alternative to Internet Explorer allows you to have more control over your online experience, especially when it comes to blocking advertising. It is free and you can download it from http://www.mozilla.com/.

7. OpenOffice.org: This office application suite has all the software you need for doing word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations for either work or school. You can even use this set of software to work with Microsoft Office files from the Word, Excel, and PowerPoint programs. This is also free and available at http://www.openoffice.org/.

8. Adobe Reader: This free software can be used to view, print, and search PDF files, which is the preferred file format for many online documents. It often comes with new computers, and if not you can get it for free at http://www.adobe.com/.

9. Google Desktop: This free program allows you to search for content on your computer’s hard drive the same way you do online searches. You can find this program at http://desktop.google.com/.

10. iTunes media player: You can use this free program from Apple to easily manage most of the audio and music files on your computer. You do not have to buy an iPod to use the software. The software is included with new Apple computers, and you can download a version of the software for computers that run the Windows operating system.

Just remember, going online does not have to be expensive. Many of the things you want to do with your computer should not cost you a lot of extra money or extra hassle. The money you spend on basic extra hardware will allow your computer to be a very valuable tool for you and your family.

How to reduce the lag?

I have some lag on CombarArms and i need to know how to get rid of it. I pass the recomended requirements but it still lags any help? RECOMMENDED MY STUFF Windows XP or better Vista Pentium 4 – 2.4GHz+ 2.10 GHz 512Mb RAM 3006MB RAM GeForce FX 5600 or better GeForce 7150M / nForce 630M Version 9.0C or later Direct X10 2.0 Gb 141 Gb Cable/DSL or better Cable/DSL My graphics card is in the description stuff. And how do i give best answer?

Answer:
It can be as simple as using the built-in “Disk Cleanup” and “Disk Defragmenter” Utilities already available in Windows ( Start – All Programs – Accessories – System Tools ) HINT: You SHOULD use BOTH but start Disk Cleanup first ! Of course, sometimes it needs the BIG cleanup and here is my technique on how to do a TOTAL non-destructive cleanup: a few tricks (and associated free programs) I use when helping friends with problems. 1) The Java Runtime Environment causes issues, you should use a free program I use myself called JavaRa to get the latest JRE and remove older versions. This will ensure the security of your computer and a little extra space on your hard disk. Find more information here: http://raproducts.org/javara.html and the download link here: http://raproducts.org/ ( Currently, JavaRa supports Windows Vista without UAC so if you have Vista and are not comfortable temporarily disabling it, don’t use JavaRa ) 2) Flush every single possible accumulated browsing junk in ALL your browsers (you should always delete these from time to time). Method One (now): In Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, then Delete Browsing History and in the box, click the Delete all button (bottom left) and Yes. In Firefox, go to tools, clear private data, make sure all boxes are checked and then click on the clear private data now button. Method Two (in the future – about every two weeks for normal use of the internet – every week for heavy use): In Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, then click Delete Browsing History and in the box that opens, do the following steps (in order) 1) click the button near Temporary Internet Files, click Yes and wait for the box that opens to close. 2) click the button near History, click Yes and wait for the box that opens to close. Finally, click the close button (bottom right) to finish. In Firefox, Go to tools, clear private data and uncheck all except Browsing History, Cache and Authenticated Sessions boxes and then click on the clear private data now button. Note: Close your browser ( This is good for Internet Explorer and Firefox ) when you’re done to clear cookies that are still in memory. For older versions of the same programs or for other browsers, check their help files for guidance on doing the cleanup. 3) Turn off the restore point utility. Here is a guide for XP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310405 and an article for Vista: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/9f6d755a-74bb-4a7d-a625-d762dd8e79e51033.mspx 4) Install a free cleaner called Glary Utilities ( http://www.glaryutilities.com/gu.html ) to remove Windows junk files, registry orphans and/or remnants of installs/uninstalls (there is always some). 5) Defragment your drive with your defragmenter. 6) Turn system restore back on. ( the same guide and article given in part 3 ) ( A word of caution, with programs this powerful, be sure to read all instructions and help files completely so that you apply fixes correctly the first time ! ) NOTE: Finish by making sure to download and install the very latest stable drivers for EVERYTHING and that they are for the correct OS (Don’t use XP drivers on Vista and Vice versa – one exception would be if they are indicated for both OS) for a better overall computing experience. Hope this helps

Answer:
Sure, that doesnt seem so hard to remove… Sure : Tools that will most likely get rid of it ( almost certain ) : ♣ AntiVir Avira ( highest detection rate among all antiviruses, 99,6% ) ♣ ClamWin ♣ ThreatFire ( both being an addition programs to anti-viruses, with strong on demand scanner ) How to configure Avira correctly : http://www.ecuhq.com/tested-programs-how-to-use-f32/antivir-personal-edition-classic-how-to-use-t143.htm How to configure ClamWin : http://www.ecuhq.com/tested-programs-how-to-use-f32/clamwin-free-antivirus-how-to-use-t140.htm Antispyware would be ↓ ( all free ) : ♣ Spyware Terminator ♣ Windows Defender ♣ Spyware Blaster ♣ Ad-Aware SE ♣ HijackThis Spyware Terminator & Windows Defender are known for their aggression when removing and HijackThis is extremely useful for removing their registry entries. When everything else fails, HijackThis might solve the problem. Especially if combined with ComboFix. However that tool is not advised to novice computer users. HijackThis is able to remove malicious registry entries. Pretty useful for final cleaning. How to use HijackThis : http://www.ecuhq.com/tested-programs-how-to-use-f32/hijackthis-how-to-use-t67.htm All available at : http://www.filehippo.com http://www.download.com http://www.softpedia.com http://sourceforge.net/ While on it, also destroy all restore points, virus may be backed up in them : 1. Click Start / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore 2. Look on the left and click on : “System Restore Settings” 3. Check a box, at : “Turn off System Restore on all drives” 4. Click Apply / Yes / Ok 5. Click Start / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore 6. Click Yes 7. Uncheck that box 8. Apply / Ok Hope it helped. MICROSOFT VERSION CHANGE!!!!?

i have used a 2007 version of windows and my computer only has 2005 how do i transfer the writting when it does not open the file??? plz help i need to no asap

Answer:
I am assuming that you used a 2007 version of Microsoft Word and now you can’t open it. Here are two solutions. The first link sends you to information on how to open the doc with Internet Explorer or notepad. The second link sends you to a free download of Word 2007 Reader. You can open the doc and save it to a lesser version. Question: How do you quickly read a docx document on some computer that has no Microsoft Office Word 2007 and is neither connected to the Internet (online conversion is therefore ruled out). Solution: No worries, you can make a docx reader out of Internet Explorer or any other text editor (like notepad) – just follow these steps: Step 1: Change the file extension of your docx file to .zip (hello.docx -> hello.zip) Step 2: Extract the contents of this zip file locally using Winzip or any other unzip utility. Step 3: Open the “word” folder in the extracted files and you should see a file called document.xml. Open document.xml inside Internet Explorer and there you have the full text of your docx document.

Does Firefox crash a lot for you?

I have a PC. I may have to un-install & than re-install it. Would adding memory help?

Answer:
I have a PC & Firefox Never crashes for me. It is far more reliable than Internet Explorer. Yet, it could be caused by one of your addons or some other internet related program you have set up. Sounds like some sort of interference.

how can i update my internet explorer 6 to 7?

pls help me how

Answer:
Sheesh…….Your operating system must be outta date. I.E 8 is not ready for prime time yet but you can get I.E.7 here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx If you don’t have a legitimate copy of your operating system you might not be able to download it. You better check at windows update site to see how far you’re behind on everything else before your computer gets raped.

Spyware Blocker And Popup Blocker Guide

Anyone who has been online for awhile now probably knows what a pop up is. Some of these pop ups come from the websites you are visiting and some of them come from spyware that has infected your computer. Of course there are some very good tools you can use to keep these popups blocked. For this article we will be taking a look at stopping spyware and how to find a good spyware popup blocker.

Spyware Blocker

The first thing you should do is install a good spyware blocker. If there is any popups that are happening because of spyware on your computer this will solve the problem. It may not even be a bad idea to install more then one of these. If one blocker does pickup all the spyware the other may pick up the rest. If you use the Internet regularly make sure that you scan regularly.

Popup Blockers

There are lots and lots of popup blockers on the market. Some of these blockers are free and others will cost you money. If you want advanced features then you will have to pay for a blocker. For some those extra features may be worth the extra money spent. However, it is up to you to decide if you want to purchse software or go with one of the free ones that are on the market.

The first blocker you should try is the Google toolbar. This is one of the best free popup blockers you can get. Some people will not like the toolbar and it's features are fairly limited. But, it is good for somone looking for a simple blocker.

One of my personal favourite blockers is the Firefox browser witch is free. Firefox is very good at detecting popups and blocking them compared to many other browsers. Most people will also find that Firefox does not pickup the same amounts of spyware that Internet explorer does. Installing Firefox will probably be one of the best decision you will ever make for keeping your computer more secure.

StopZilla is one of the best products on the market for blocking popups and spyware. It can detect spyware, quarantine it, and deal with adware all in real time. This will give your computer another level of security that most computer users don’t have. I highly recommend for keeping your computer safe.

The downloads are not in the control panel. How are you going to remove them. Also how do you locate downloads?

To remove downloads I have to locate first where they are. I can’t find them in control panel so I can’t use the remove/delete downloads. If I can’t find them in control panel, where do I find them? I don’t see them also in my desktop.

Answer:
it depends where you set your download folder. If you’re using firefox then go to ‘tools’ on the top of the browser and choose ‘download’, a small window will open along with the files you have downloaded as well as the path If you’re using Internet explorer, go to ‘tools’, hit ‘toolbars’ and then select ‘History’ and check it. It should be somewhere in there
