Long Island is an island located in the state of New York, sitting east of Manhattan. It has four counties which includes Suffolk and Nassau. When a lot of folks think of Long Island, however, they just think of the first two counties, says a Suffolk County computer repair owner. In fact, the county of Nassau is rated as the 3rd richest county in the state of New York. Because it is an island, there are many waterfront properties that were built by Aristocrats with family money a long time ago. It had a population growth from the 1950′s to the 1970′s and was considered the fastest growing county in America. This high density of population still exists with them wanting to be close to all of the things that New York City offers so nearby.

Although many Long Islanders work in New York city, there are a lot of employment opportunities on the little island too. It is known for its research and engineering and has many businesses that do business in those areas there. It also has the largest industrial park on the East Coast with more than 1300 businesses dealing with industries situated there. The more recent industry of making wine and vineyards has happened during the past two decades in addition to other types of farms such as pumpkins.

Long Island is known to be a huge melting pot of different ethnicities and this is shown in the variety of restaurants that are located there. There are several wonderful pizza places with the big Italian influence there in addition to diners and delis that have Greek food and some terrific bagel shops that are owned by Jewish families. A couple of well known Long islanders that have written songs about their hometown are Billy Joel and Paul Simon among several others.
