I actually did almost all of my college work with Slackware Linux. If I needed Windows, I booted XP within a virtual machine. Of course… I left college before Vista was released. Now that I’m going back, I set up a laptop for school that runs Windows 7. If I actually had a valid license for Vista Business or Ultimate, I would use Vista. My preference for personal operating systems is based more on certain hardware support and functionality than any aesthetic or ease of use quality. For the average user, I suggest Vista with the 7 upgrade when it becomes available to them. XP is a bad choice right now due to the fact that when an upgrade is required, it will have to be a new installation rahter than an “upgrade.” Only Vista is going to be upgradeable to 7, and the upgrade is likely going to be free for Vista users.
